Student Testimonials

The following are testimonials from previous SPUR interns. Each year we try to collect as much feedback as we can about the program so we can continue to grow and improve.

Testimonials from 2014

"I found my experience to be so beyond my expectations that I'm afraid any other summer program I apply to next year will fall short of my new expectations. From my perspective, there is not really much that needs to be done to improve the experience. It's a winning formula. "

2014 SPUR Intern

"I learned so much about research and what it is like to have a research career. At the beginning of the program I had no idea what the day-to-day life of a scientist entailed, but for the last 10 weeks I have been living it. It also gave me a lot of insight into science communication and education, which is the most important thing to me, since I want nothing more in life than to teach. Seeing seminars, watching my peers practice their presentations, and especially practicing presenting myself was most instrumental in these insights. Without a structured program like SPUR, it isn't always common to have so many opportunities to present and practice presenting."

2014 SPUR Intern

"The program changed my view on the day to day lives of research scientists. The fact that I benefited so much from the program and the time my mentor put in made me want to be a mentor."

2014 SPUR Intern

"SPUR definitely influenced my views on research. That's all I can picture myself doing now after college, and it sounds fantastic!"

2014 SPUR Intern

"It was a great experience. I am glad I got to see Oregon and do research in a lab here. I say that because working in a research lab can be a tiresome effort. When results do not come and failure persists it's easy to get burnt out. Going out every weekend to a new place and experiencing all of Oregon helps keep you motivated. "

Testimonials from 2013

"this program enabled me to see what research was all about, from working in a lab, to thinking about science critically..."

2013 SPUR Intern

"... SPUR influenced my views on research, it allowed me to see that there are many different fields of research and you don't have to be restricted to just one particular study." "... SPUR gave me a very unique opportunity to experience what it's like to be a part of a dedicated team of scientists and what exactly graduate school is like..."

2013 SPUR Intern

"... Everything about my project was new and exciting. I'm leaving SPUR with a new outlook on not only what my interests are, but also, what I am capable of. Of course, I intend to take what I've learned and apply it back home- however, this program has also made me excited about the things I don't know (which is a ton!). Nothing makes me more excited than thinking about what's next- SPUR does an amazing job of facilitating these questions and sparking new interests of future study."

2013 SPUR Intern

"... Having never conducted research, SPUR allowed me to enter a lab and see the steps of research from the very beginning. In my particular lab I got to see the approval process of conducting research with human patients (IRB approval), the recruitment of subjects, collection of data, etc. It was a unique opportunity to be able to participate throughout each step. I also got insight into the life of a grad student, involving research and teaching and grant applications..."

2013 SPUR Intern

"SPUR has further pushed me into continuing my education past undergraduate. The main way SPUR has helped is in giving me confidence that I can succeed in a graduate or professional school."

2013 SPUR Intern

"SPUR has been one of the best summers of my life because it gave me a chance to see what it really means to be a 'scientist'. The dedication, thought process and hard work that goes into a single project. Its one think to dream about a researcher, but actually doing it, is a huge eye opener. SPUR has without a doubt reinforced my career goals and helped me grow not only as a person, but as a scientist."

2013 SPUR Intern

"SPUR has taught me so much about my own interests and has given me insight into what areas of research I may want to pursue in the future."

2013 SPUR Intern

"I had the most amazing time of my life. Being able to live in a totally different state, alone for the first time, was great. Being able to live in science everyday was wonderful. Being able to meet smart, funny, well-rounded interns from around the country was priceless. Having a great PI, mentor, and lab mates was wonderful and I couldn't have asked for better people to be in lab with everyday. I will forever be thankful and grateful for this opportunity"

2013 SPUR Intern

"SPUR has been completely fulfilling."

2013 SPUR Intern

"I remember writing on my application to the SPUR program that I hoped to gain experience working on an in depth, focused topic and that I hoped to learn more about the scientific process in a way that would prepare me for the future. SPUR has given me the exact experience I was looking for and I am so incredibly grateful to have been a part of this program. This summer has been a once in a lifetime experience that I will never take for granted."

"With the generous counsel of my SPUR professor, this summer gave me my first original comprehension of academic and experimental procedures in graduate school. My SPUR project gave me room to think and troubleshoot independently.  I learned how to use online resources for experimentations.  SPUR gave me a sense of how graduate school works, the pace of research, the rewards of hard work, and clinical application of research. Furthermore, it was my first real introduction to the academic community of scientists."
